World Water Day | facemandu

Celebrated on every 22nd of March, this year’s World Water Day theme is “Nature for Water“- exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century. Nature-based solutions have the potential to solve many of our water challenges. We need to do so much more with ‘green’ infrastructure and harmonize it with ‘grey’ infrastructure wherever possible. Planting new forests, reconnecting rivers to floodplains, and restoring wetlands will re-balance the water cycle and improve human health and livelihoods. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education and livelihoods.
In the case of Nepal, it is home to some of the most extreme landscapes on earth. It’s the things that make the country so beautiful – the biggest mountains, widest valleys and heaviest monsoon rains – that make it that much harder to reach people with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.

The above infographic highlights some key facts about drinking water here in our city Kathmandu.

  • 80% of Kathmanduties has access to drinking water — which is also not so clean.
  • Out of 150 tonnes of daily wastage produced by Kathmandu, 75 tonnes wastage are dumped into water resources.
  • Every year 400+ children under the age of 5 die due to diarrhea.
  • Only 6 out 10 people has access to clean and proper sanitation in Kathmandu.
  • The daily demand for water in Kathmandu is around 390 million liters where as the supply is only 90 million liters.

Let’s use water properly and responsibly. Let’s make use of rain water. Rain water harvesting is a legit way to utilize rain water for our day-to-day tasks.
